Educational Records Release Authorization

This form allows a parent, or other designated individual, to access educational information and communicate with the child’s school personnel without any privacy issues. It is also known as a Federal Education and Privacy Rights Act (“FERPA”) Waiver.

Does my child need one?

If your child is over the age of 18 or is under 18 but attends a school beyond high school level, and you do not claim your child as dependent, your child should execute an Educational Records Release Authorization. If you do claim your child as a dependent, you may access your child’s educational records, but may be required to submit your tax return to the school in order to prove their status as your dependent, and schools may require you do so every term.

What happens if my child doesn't have one?

If your child is over the age of 18 or attends a school beyond high school level, and you do not claim your child as a dependent, you may not be able to access your child’s educational records, even if you are paying tuition or other educational expenses.

When is the document effective?

This depends on the school. Some schools may require your child to submit one each term, other schools may allow for a waiver to be effective until revoked by the student.
